PSPO I Exam Guide: Format and How to Pass

By PrepForScrum Team ·

The Professional Scrum Product Owner I (PSPO I) is Scrum.org's certification for everyone accountable for the value of a product. It shares its format with the PSM I, but tests a distinctly different perspective. This guide covers what to expect and how to prepare.

The exam format

Identical to the PSM I in structure:

  • 80 questions in 60 minutes: 45 seconds per question
  • 85% passing score: at most 12 mistakes
  • Single choice, multiple choice, and true/false
  • $200 per attempt, taken online without proctoring
  • Valid for life: no renewal, no annual fees, no required course

What the PSPO I actually tests

The exam views the entire Scrum framework through one question: does this maximize the value of the product? The core areas:

The Product Owner accountability. The PO is accountable for maximizing value and for effective Product Backlog management. A nuance the exam loves: the PO may delegate the work (writing items, refining) but never the accountability.

Product Backlog management. Ordering by value, risk, and dependencies; refinement as an ongoing activity that consumes at most 10% of the Developers' capacity; transparency as the basis for every decision. The Product Backlog's commitment is the Product Goal.

Stakeholders and saying no. Scenario questions about requests mid-Sprint, conflicting stakeholder wishes, and pressure to expand scope. The Guide-aligned answer usually involves ordering the Product Backlog transparently, not negotiating scope inside the Sprint.

Empiricism applied to product decisions. Value is measured after release, not promised in plans. An important distinction: every Sprint produces a usable Increment, but releasing it is a business decision; the Sprint Review is not a release gate.

The Scrum core. Roughly half the exam overlaps with PSM I territory: events, timeboxes, the three accountabilities, the Scrum values, self-management.

How it differs from the PSM I

  • Same format, same bar: 80 questions, 85%
  • Different lens: the PSM I asks "is this Scrum done right?"; the PSPO I asks "does this decision serve product value?"
  • Different traps: PSPO I questions punish project-thinking: scope contracts, steering committees, the PO as a requirements clerk

If you already hold the PSM I, expect to prepare in about half the time; the framework core carries over, and you only add the product perspective.

Typical traps to train for

  1. "The PO must personally...": almost always wrong; the PO may delegate the work, never the accountability.
  2. Treating the Sprint Review as acceptance: the Increment meets the Definition of Done during the Sprint; the Review is for inspecting the outcome and adapting the Product Backlog with stakeholders.
  3. Confusing ordering with estimation: the PO orders the Product Backlog; sizing belongs to the Developers.
  4. Extending the Sprint for unfinished items: the Sprint ends on time; unfinished work returns to the Product Backlog and is re-ordered.

How to prepare

Read the Scrum Guide 2020 with the product lens: for every paragraph, ask what it means for value. Then train under real conditions (80 questions, 60 minutes) and analyze every explanation. Our PSPO I preparation package mirrors the real exam exactly, and the complete bundle is the cheaper route if you plan to take both certifications. Want a first reading of your level? The free PSPO I mock test takes about 15 minutes.
